West Belfast boy waiting on a heart transplant has won a top award in London over the weekend. Dáithí Mac Gabhann was born with congenital heart defect Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and has undergone major surgery but now needs a heart transplant. On Friday night was presented with the Mark Lynn Young Heart Hero award by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) at a ceremony at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre. Full Story Here

City Hall in the ‘pink’ for Organ Donation week

BELFAST City Hall was illuminated pink on Monday night as part of Organ Donation week. The civic building was cast in colour following Sinn Féin Councillor’s Micheál Donnelly’s council motion calling for cross party support for a ‘Soft Opt-Out Organ Donation’ during the full monthly meeting. Organ donation survey finds 69% in NI back ‘soft opt-out’ system

Backing the calls for the soft opt-out system is the family of Dáithí Mac Gabhann who needs a heart. Dáithí’s dad Máirtín MacGabhann said: “Dáithí was born with a congenital heart condition called hypoplastic left heart syndrome which means he was essentially born with half a working heart. He has had numerous heart surgeries since he was born and now his only chance is a heart transplant. Full Story Here

“Words Save Lives” – let’s talk about organ donation

The Department of Health and the Public Health Agency are urging everyone to talk to their family and friends about organ donation during Organ Donation Week (2-8 September). The family of 3 year old Dáithí from Belfast, who is currently waiting on a new heart, have organised a number of events to help raise awareness. His father Máirtín Mac Gabhann said: “Dáithí has been on the routine transplant waiting list for over a year.
